Background of the study
The rapid proliferation of social media in Nigeria has brought about significant transformations in language use, especially in syntactic structures. Facebook, as one of the most popular platforms, serves as a fertile ground for observing these changes in everyday communication. Users’ comments on Facebook are marked by creative adaptations that diverge from standard syntactic norms, reflecting the interplay between informal digital communication and linguistic innovation (Ibrahim, 2023). This study investigates how the syntax employed in Facebook comments encapsulates broader sociocultural shifts in Nigerian communication. As users navigate a digital space that encourages brevity and expressiveness, new sentence structures and unconventional punctuation emerge. These phenomena not only illustrate a departure from traditional grammatical frameworks but also highlight the influence of digital media on language evolution. Furthermore, the study examines how peer interaction, cultural identity, and the affordances of the platform contribute to these syntactic innovations (Okafor, 2024). By focusing on a specific digital corpus, this research seeks to document the syntactic patterns that have evolved in response to the demands of real-time interaction and social validation. The findings are expected to offer insights into the mechanisms of language change in digital settings, thereby contributing to the broader understanding of syntax variation in online discourse (Chukwu, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Despite the growing significance of social media in shaping language, there is limited empirical research on how Facebook comments in Nigeria reflect syntactic variation. Current studies tend to focus on lexical innovations, overlooking the systematic syntactic shifts that occur in digital discourse (Adebayo, 2023). This gap hampers our ability to understand how informal online interactions challenge traditional syntactic rules. Additionally, the absence of comparative analyses that consider the influence of digital affordances on syntax creates a further obstacle to integrating digital communication into mainstream linguistic theory (Okoro, 2024). Without targeted research, educators and language policy developers lack critical insights into how digital language practices should be accommodated within formal linguistic frameworks.

Objectives of the study

  1. To analyze the syntactic patterns in Facebook comments among Nigerian users.
  2. To identify factors influencing syntactic innovations in digital discourse.
  3. To assess the implications of these changes on conventional grammatical norms.

Research questions

  1. What syntactic variations are evident in Nigerian Facebook comments?
  2. How do digital affordances and cultural factors influence these syntactic innovations?
  3. What implications do these variations have on traditional syntactic frameworks?

Significance of the study
This study is significant because it provides a detailed examination of syntactic innovation within Nigerian Facebook comments. The insights garnered will be useful for linguists, educators, and digital communication experts by highlighting the evolving nature of syntax in informal online environments and informing future language policy and pedagogy (Ibrahim, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study
This study focuses exclusively on the syntactic patterns observed in Facebook comments among Nigerian users. It does not extend to other social media platforms or other aspects of language beyond syntax, ensuring a concentrated examination of the specified digital phenomenon.

Definitions of terms

  • Syntax: The study of sentence structure and the arrangement of words.
  • Digital Discourse: Communication that occurs in online environments.
  • Facebook Comments: User-generated textual responses on the Facebook platform.
